Neera studied medicine at Cardiff University and undertook specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Wales. She completed her PhD on Pharmacological Modulators of the Metabolic Syndrome at the University Hospital of Wales and is a Consultant Diabetologist at University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff. She has a special interest in type 1 diabetes, insulin pump therapy, transitional care, and diabetes structured education for patients and health professionals.
Ambar Basu - United Kingdom
Dr. Ambar Basu MBBS, FRCP (Edin), FRCP (Lond) joined the Diabetes Diploma as a Tutor for the first time in 2013 having entered specialist training in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine in 2003. Alongside this work, he is a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at the Royal Bolton Hospital with special interests in Diabetes in young persons, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Richard studied medicine at Cardiff University and completed his specialist training throughout Wales. His MD on Diabetic Nephropathy was supervised by Professor Owens and he has published widely in this area. He is a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Singleton Hospital, Swansea in South Wales. Richard has a particular interest in diabetes in pregnancy, insulin pumps and diabetic foot disease.

Julia Platts United Kingdom
Julia studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and undertook specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Wales. She was appointed Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales in 2002 and in 2008 moved to a consultant post in the University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff. She has a particular interest in type 1 diabetes, including insulin pump therapy, pregnancy and diabetes and diabetes in young adults.
Julia has also recently been appointed as National Clinical Lead for Wales for Diabetes.
Aled Roberts United Kingdom
Dr Roberts became a Consultant Physician with an interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in 2009. He was awarded an MD for research into Myocardial and Vascular function in Type 2 Diabetes in 2007. His interests include the management of hospital inpatients with Diabetes and he maintains his research interests in myocardial and vascular disease in diabetes. He holds an Honorary Lecturer title with Cardiff University and is a tutor on the Cardiff University Diabetes Diploma.
Ponnusamy Saravanan United Kingdom
Dr Ponnusamy Saravanan, is currently Associate Professor and Honorary Consultant Physician at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, United Kingdom, a senior academic position he holds for the past 7.5 years. He completed his specialist training as well as his PhD in Bristol & Exeter.
His primary research interest is to understand, “why South Asians are at higher risk of metabolic disorders?”. He strongly believes in early life origins of metabolic risk. He is the chief investigator of the large MRC funded PRiDE study (n=4500), which is part of UK-India collaborative research, studying the maternal factors affecting the metabolic programming of diabetes. This study will help in understanding the pathogenesis and prevention of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) as well as how the risk is passed on to the offspring.
He is the UK Chief Investigator for a 5-year long CVD outcome study in Type 2 Diabetes as well as another international study on newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes. He has presented in several national and international conferences as well as an invited speaker for more than 20 national and international meetings. He co-authored of several peer-reviewed publications and has served as a Journal Reviewer for JCEM, Diabetes Care, Diabetes, Diabetic Medicine, Clinical Endocrinology, Primary Care Diabetes, and the Journal of Endocrinology. He regularly reviews research grant applications for Research Councils (MRC, BBSRC, ESRC), Diabetes UK, NIHR-HTA and NIHR-RfPB programmes.

Professor Jeffrey W Stephens (BSc, MB BS, PhD, FRCP) was one of the first Tutors on the Diabetes Diploma and is currently a full Professor of Medicine (Diabetes & Metabolism) based at the Institute of Life Sciences at Swansea University and a Consultant Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine at Morriston Hospital, Swansea. Current research interests include type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and exercise in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Naveed Younis United Kingdom
Dr Naveed Younis (BSc, MD, FRCP) qualified from Manchester University in 1993 and trained in the North West. He was a Clinical Research Ophthalmology Fellow in Liverpool studying aspects of retinopathy screening and has published widely in this field. Dr Younis has been a Consultant Physician at University Hospital South Manchester since 2004 and is currently the clinical lead. He leads on diabetic foot and renal diabetes in South Manchester. He is an accredited educator for DAFNE and delivers on the Warwick programme locally. He is a member of the Greater Manchester Medicines Management Group (GMMMG) and involved in development of Primary care diabetes guidelines in the region. He is involved in multi-centre clinical trials in Type 2 diabetes.
He is the current training programme director in endocrinology, has developed national postgraduate educational courses in diabetes and is an undergraduate tutor for the University of Manchester. He is editorial lead for diabetic medicine journal and an avid Manchester City supporter.
Vinay Eligar United Kingdom
Dr Eligar is a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University Hospital of Wales Cardiff. Besides the clinical activities, he is involved in teaching medical students from Cardiff University and is the clinical and educational supervisor to medical trainees in Wales deanery. He has authored book for higher specialty exams in diabetes and endocrinology, and developed materials for Diabetes MSc course conducted by Cardiff University and maintains significant interest in inpatient diabetes management.
His current research interests include "Strategies for Inpatient hypoglycaemia prevention". As a part of Thyroid research team affiliated to Cardiff University, he is involved in "Genetics of hypothyroidism (GENTHYR) study, looking into role of T3 and T4 combination therapies in specific subsets of hypothyroidism.
Dr Shikha Jain MBBS, DCH, MRCPCH United Kingdom
Dr Shikha Jain is a Consultant Paediatrician at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend and is leading the Paediatric diabetes service at Neath Port Talbot Hospital. After obtaining a Diploma in Child Health in India, she entered into Higher Specialist Training Programme in Paediatrics and received her certificate of completion of training in August 2015. During her training she developed an interest in Diabetes in Children and Young Adults and completed SPIN and Level 3 training in it which has been accredited by Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Along with Professor John Gregory at UHW, Dr Shikha Jain has developed the Paediatric diabetes module for Cardiff University which has been incorporated into the Adult Diabetes diploma course and currently she is the Lead tutor for this module.

Asjad Hameed - UAE
Dr Asjad Hameed’s skills and experience cover both endocrinology and diabetes with a particular focus on type 2 diabetes, lipid management, erectile dysfunction, diabetic foot and vitamin D deficiency. He trained in London, UK and his specialist knowledge has been gathered from a vast array of study, research and practice with a number of leading hospitals in Eire and the United Kingdom, including placement as Consultant Physician in Endocrinology at Walsall Hospital. At present he is working at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Abu Dhabi, largest centre for Diabetes care in Whole Gulf area where they see atleast 600 patients a day.
Mohamed Hassanein - UAE
Currently a Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine in a district general hospital in North Wales, Mohamed has a special interest in macrovascular disease (MVD) in diabetes, erectile dysfunction in diabetes and thyroid disease. He has published a number of papers on MVD in diabetics, guidelines for management of diabetes in Ramadan and the effects of trace elements and some natural supplements in diabetes and hypertension. He also has a special interest in medical education.

Dr. Ghaida Kaddaha MBBS, MRCP (UK), FRCP (LONDON) is a Consultant Endocrinologist/Diabetologist, Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Centre. Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Associate Professor of Medicine (Dubai Medical College for Girls). Dubai-(UAE), Honorary Lecturer, Cardiff University. After Obtaining the MBBS degree, I completed the residency at Rashid Hospital in Dubai. I worked as a registrar in internal medicine at the John Radcliff hospital in Oxford – UK. I completed my postgraduate training in Endocrinology/ Diabetes at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford UK, at which time I obtained my MRCP (UK) degree. I was elected for fellowship of the Royal College of Physician – London in 1999. I established the diabetes Unit at Rashid Hospital in the year 2000. I was the local principal investigator to a large number of phase 2,3 and 4 international multicentre clinical trials.

Shaifali Joshi - South Africa
I am a medical practitioner with 13 years experience dealing with Diabetes Mellitus. Most of this experience comes from seeing patients with type 2 diabetes. I run a large diabetes centre in Pretoria, South Africa, that includes screening programs for retinopathy and foot complications, insulin initiation, diabetes education on diet and home blood glucose monitoring. Our practice is also participates in clinical trials for the newer diabetes drugs. I am also regularly involved in giving diabetes related talks to nursing staff, diabetes nurse educators and general practitioners. One of the other activities I enjoy is being a tutor on the Cardiff diploma in diabetes. The interaction with the students and colleagues has kept me abreast with all the new development in the field of diabetes.
Neville Wellington - South Africa
Dr Neville Wellington is a GP who practices in a 12 man practice in Cape Town and recently celebrated 20 years in practice. He did the PGDD in 2011/2012 and considers the course to be "one of the best professional medical courses I have ever done". Dr Wellington currently runs a diabetes practice within his practice and looks forward to growing it along with 2 other colleagues. He is married with 3 children who are 15 (boy) and 11 and 9 (girls). His hobbies include golf, cycling and hobie sailing, and he is also actively involved in the local church.

Almoutaz Ahmed - Saudi Arabia
Dr.Almoutaz Alkhier Ahmed is of Sudanese nationality. His qualifications include: MSc Diabetes, PGDip Diabetes , MRCGP[INT], ESH clinical hypertension specialist ,IIWCC , FRSPH, MAcadMEs. He has been a tutor on the diabetes diploma programme at Cardiff University since 2013. He has participated in many national and international conferences as speaker and is a member of many international diabetes associations and working groups. Dr Ahmed has published more than 100 papers in many international medical journals, two books about diabetes and obesity in Arabic language and has also written chapters for international books. He loves reading, writing, travelling and spending time with his family (married with two children).
Ebtasam Ba Essa - Saudi Arabia
Dr Ebtesam Mohammad Salem Ba-Essa has more than 25 years’ experience in the field of Medicine and more than 19 years’ experience in training and examining undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is the Medical Director at Dammam Medical Complex and Honorary Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine (Dammam University, College of Medicine at King Faisal University).
Dr Ba-Essa is an Honorary Lecturer and Diabetes Diploma Tutor at Cardiff University, having been a member of our faculty since the inception of the course back in 2008. She has also been involved in the teaching program to medical students as well as examiner at the College of Medicine, King Faisal University since 2001, contributed to the GP and physician local (different regions of the kingdom) training course in diabetes as a speaker, as well as postgraduate board training courses and Review since year 2002
Dr Ba-Essa is a Member of the Arab Diabetes consensus Group (ADCG) and the Middle East Insulin Working group. She is also a Member of the American and European Endocrine Society, the American Diabetic Association, the Saudi Diabetic & Endocrine Association, the National Diabetes Mellitus Committee and many other local committees at Dammam Medical Complex and Eastern Province.
Attended and contributed to many national and international symposia and courses as speaker and moderator. She has published many papers, contributed to various National diabetes guidelines and reviewed many manuscripts.
She is married, with two children.

Magdy Megellaa - Egypt
Magdy Megallaa got his Master Degree from Alexandria University in 2000. His Master Degree thesis was about "Association between H. Pylori infection and CAD in Type 2 Diabetic Patients". He received his Degree of Doctorate of Internal Medicine (Diabetes & Metabolism) from Alexandria University in 2006. His Doctoral Degree thesis was about "Clinical, Immunological and Metabolic Study of Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents".
He spent his Post-Doctoral Training in Chicago (Illinois) and Cleveland (Ohio) in USA during 2006 and 2007. His interest area during his post-Doctoral training was about "Management of Diabetic Foot Disease". He had his training at Rosalind Franklin University with Professor David Armstrong, then at Cleveland Clinic with Professor Peter Cavanagh. After he returned home, he contributed, with his colleagues, in establishing the first "Diabetic Foot Center" at Alexandria University, applying the up-to-date preventive and therapeutic services for diabetic patients having foot disorders.
He is currently sharing in translational research, partially sponsored by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), exploring the impact of diabetes education on prevention of lower extremity amputation in diabetes. In response to an invitation from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF-BRIDGES) to replicate the Alexandria foot care translational project in other countries, Magdy travelled to Qingdao (China), Harare (Zimbabwe) and Quito (Ecuador) to collaborate in initiating preventive foot projects there. His work also includes studying the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-based glycemic profile associated with different local meals, comparing diabetic and non-diabetic subjects.
Magdy has also a great interest in distance learning and online teaching; he is currently an Honorary Lecturer at both Cardiff University and Leicester University UK, participating in postgraduate Diabetes Diploma Programme and some other educational activities.

Mark Savage - Australia
Mark was born in Ireland, trained in Manchester in the UK and worked for the English NHS as a consultant for many years. He was a Senior Lecturer at Manchester University and was involved in Diabetes UK as well as the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, serving on several committees and contributing tot he Joint British Diabetes Societies guideline series, chairing the Diabetes Ketoacidosis group. In 2013 Mark moved to Victoria Australia where he is Director of Medicine and Clinical Dean at Bendigo Health, north of Melbourne and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University. Mark has been an on-line tutor for Cardiff University since 2009.

Dr John Doupis MD, PhD joined the Diabetes Diploma as a Tutor in 2012 and is currently directing the Diabetes Division and Clinical Research Center of Iatriko Falirou General Hospital as well as, the Internal Medicine and Diabetes Department of the NS Naval Hospital Athens, Greece. His special areas of interest are Diabetes and its complications, especially the Diabetic foot and Obesity.

Norlaila Mustafa - Malaysia
Dr Norlaila Mustafa graduated from National University of Malaysia in 1995. She obtained her postgraduate degree MMed (Malaysia) in 2002, after which, she began her career as a lecturer in the Department of Medicine, National University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She then enhanced her career by obtaining her MD from Cardiff University in 2006. She is now an Associate Professor and Consultant Endocrinologist, a post she held since 2007. She is also an Advisor for the Diabetes Nurse Educator Course for the hospital since 2007. She has been appointed as Honorary Lecturer for Cardiff University, Wales, UK since 1st March 2009. Recently, she has been appointed as visiting Consultant Endocrinologist to the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur.
As an academician, she is involved in training and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders, training the Diabetes Nurse Educators and other Healthcare professionals.
She is involved in numerous researches in the field of Diabetes and Endocrinology – including the epidemiology of metabolic syndrome in Malaysia, diabetes in pregnancy, thyroid disorders in pregnancy, the role of hesperidine in osteoporosis and supervising the PhD and master students’ thesis. In addition to that, she is also involved in International Multicentre Pharmaceutical Drug Trials.
At present, she has written a total of 35 papers and 105 proceedings and abstracts.

Muhammad Muneer - Oman
Muhammad Muneer joined the Diabetes Diploma as a Tutor in 2011 having first completed this course as a student. His MSc thesis was “PACE DIABETES: Preventive Approach for Cardiovascular Endpoints in Diabetes by Interventions like optimising HbA1c, Blood pressure control, Effectively addressing dyslipidaemia & procoagulant states, right choice of Therapeutics, Exercise & lifestyle changes and Smoking cessation” - A literature review. He subsequently got his Fellowship in Diabetes from Madras University, India in January, 2014. Since joining the team, Dr Muneer has worked hard to achieve recognition for this course in Oman where he is based as Specialist Diabetologist.
